The Hannah Gwilliam Forever Fund
Her parents Roy & Ann and her brother Tom would like to thank everyone for their moral support, kind words and tributes to Hannah, we have been deeply moved. The Service on Feb 3rd 2012 at St Mary’s Church in Burton was very special, an estimate of about 800 orders-of-service were handed out and we are grateful for all the support received.
Everybody asks if there is anything they can do to help. Our reply is an emphatic “Yes”. We all have parents, brothers, sisters, friends who are all susceptible to this disease so please help us raise as much money as we can to support the campaign so that we can protect them in the future.
Here follows a copy of Hannah’s eulogy read at the Service:
“Hannah was born in Hampton, Middlesex in 1993. A very quiet, happy and contented little girl with this incredible ability to observe and analyse the world around her and turn it into art. As you can tell by the many friends gathered here today, some who have travelled from California, Qatar, Ireland and Hampton, Hannah touched many lives in more ways than we can imagine. She was an amazing judge of character. She would listen, look and observe people and without a word convey her thoughts to Mum and Dad - a brightening of the eyes was a pass, the tiniest frown was a fail, she was invariably right.
Her creativity flowed like a stream soon after she was given a tiny easel with a blackboard on one side and artists paper on the other. Roy swears that he has seen stolen copies of her early work hanging on the walls of the Tate Modern.
Carlisle Infants and Hampton Hill Junior Schools helped create a truly rounded individual interested in music, dance, sport and hungry to learn; able to handle any challenge thrown at her. The family are truly grateful to them and all the friends from Hampton who were a big part of her life and continue to be.
The Gwilliam family returned to Pembrokeshire in 2003 and Hannah's gift of connecting with people ensured that she was immediately welcomed into the community at Burton School and long lasting friendships were soon forged. Burton Rangers Girls football club was formed, Hannah as the striker. During her years at Taskers, the network of friends grew. Haverfordwest ladies hockey club followed, Hannah on the wing. Netball, dinghy sailing, wake-boarding, surfing, dancing on stage in Mary Poppins and school shows. She also persuaded her friends to join Haverfordwest Operatic society and enjoyed performing.
Music was an important part of Hannah's life, she had become an accomplished guitarist and was no stranger to the music festival scene. Her I-Tunes library is vast and varied, impossible to pin down one particular artist, her mind was open to them all because she had the willingness to recognise talent in anyone.
As Deputy head girl she enjoyed organising the Sixth Form Ball, Leavers Yearbook and the Sixth Form Holiday in Zante. A born leader and always organising parties and gatherings, Hannah would go just that one step beyond to make sure it was different. Roy and Ann always worried about what ideas she would come up with next... She loved to bake and always made amazing birthday cakes for her friends. The dinner she cooked for 10 friends a week before Christmas will never be forgotten nor will the hours and hours she spent in selecting the perfect Christmas present and message for everyone.
She was a great fundraiser through selling cakes, sponsored fun runs, bike rides and as recently as Boxing Day she did the Tenby swim in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust with her close pals, and unsurprisingly, made the press and BBC News.
Hannah has certainly made her mark on the world, her zest for life was contagious. I hope that she in turn has provided some inspiration for her fellow students and friends just as she got inspiration from her brother Tom who she admired and loved to emulate so much. His approach to life had rubbed-off on her and moulded her into the person became. Hannah was a true and loving sister to Tom and in her special way helped him to become what he is today. She shared so many special qualities with him. Generous in praise and spirit, full of love and pride for all that he’d achieved.
As you have heard, people and relationships were a vital part of Hannah's life but she also developed a great love and respect for nature. Fascinated by the Antarctic, she taught herself everything there is to know about Emperor penguins and sketched and painted them in all forms. She admired their tenacity, strength and ability to live in such harsh conditions but at the same time understood their vulnerability. In Pembrokeshire, seals and puffins became the focal point of her interest, her favourite place, Skomer Island. A frequent visitor and supporter of the Seal Sanctuary in Milford, she was always worried about the seal pups and concerned for their welfare and survival.
However, whilst all these things were happening in her life, her love of art continued to blossom and manifested itself in cartoons, sketches, paintings, sculptures, poetry and anything else she could create with her mind and her hands. She drew inspiration from Cath & Rich in Pembrokeshire College but the last six months proved to be the most prolific, she overflowed with ideas and got a huge amount of satisfaction and fun out of what she created.
But that's enough of our words.
In her recent interview for university she was asked "what does illustration have to do with History, Geography, Science and Politics?"
She replied confidently, "History is the narrative, Geography the context or location, Science is the breadth of investigation and experimentation in materials and ideas, and Politics - that's easy, that's got to be for humour."
That's enough use of the past tense, we must all now think positively, look forward and think of her as the Artist, Hannah Gwilliam, still making a difference to our lives.”
One of her favourite verses was by Bob Marley:
"You just can't live in a negative way..........
.....make way for the positive day"
You Can Shed Tears
You can shed tears that she has gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she's gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
or you can do what she'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

20th Birthday
The sun is shining on your birthday and the sea looks blue. Starlight is swinging on its mooring and I would love to see a seal pop up its head. Thinking back over 18 years of fun Hannah birthday parties, the day would be perfect for another one.
That is not to be. but we are so very proud of our daughter and what an inspiring person she turned out to be. We are amazed at the challenges friends and family have undertaken to raise money for this charity.
Good luck Sophie with jumping out of a plane! And good luck to Phil in his training for Mountain Mayhem and Harry for Ironman.
Hannah's birthday couldn't pass without cakes and thank you Llawella and Liz for keeping up the tradition.
Thank you Hannah for giving us so much in your short life to last us a lifetime in precious stored photo albums, artwork, craft, sketchbooks, cards, videos and shared music and events that can make us smile and laugh to take away the pain of grief and loss.
Sunnyhill will always be open house to all of Hannah's friends who remember her genuine kindness and open-hearted ness. One of a kind, my daughter and a true friend. Ann x

What a fitting tribute to Hannah on her birthday, remembered in cakes and food! Wish she could share our experience, but sure she has a hand in it somehow! She would always plan something big for her birthday.
Thank you to all our friends, family and neighbours who continue to give us their support and comfort in our sorrow.

A Tribute to Hannah by her Close Friends
'Hannah, Gwill, Seal, Mole, H Gwilliam', the life and soul of the party and the heart of the group, the one person we could count on to lead the way. Whether it be any sixth form event, holidays, or making the best birthday cards and cakes in the world. We could always rely on Hannah to go the extra mile. As soon as we heard 'Gwill' would be hosting a party, we all knew it would be one to remember.
We all knew that when we were feeling down, she'd be there to put a smile on our face. She usually did this through a ridiculous rhyme or song.
Han always encourages us to work towards the best of our ability as she always saw the positives in life.
Hannah had a passion for many things, and being the best came naturally to her.Coming from a creative family, Han had a love for art and music which she expressed daily. She was fortunate enough to win two competitions to meet Mcfly, where she then met her dream husband, Dougie Poynter!
Her love for nature and animals was overwhelming and her obsession for seals, which she shared with her best friend Bethan, was beyond comparison.
Han was everyone's best friend and everyone's personal entertainer. Never without a smile on her face, we're forever blessed with her energy. She taught us how to live on the wild side and not to take life too seriously.
It has been a privilege to know Hannah and one hell of an experience! We've all been touched by her life and will never forget the precious memories in which we all treasure.
We hope she knows, wherever she is, the next round's on her!

« Next journal entry | Previous journal entry »A Tribute from Cath
We are very proud of the enthusiasm, energy and support for one another our creative students give to their studies and their peers at Pembrokeshire College and Hannah was most definetly one of this breed.
Hannah was obsessed with observing the creative potential in everything she saw or experienced. She had huge ambition to achieve combined with a generous spirit to assist and support others in their own endeavours always genuinely interested in the work of her peers and always respectful of the teaching team and technical staff because she was hungry to learn and continue to improve. She will be deeply missed by the student body and staff a like. We can only hope to strive and maintain the high standards that Hannah set.
To leave some words to Hannah herself and ones we shall adopt in the department.
In her recent interview for Cardiff Hannah was asked what does Illustration have to do with History, Geography, Science and Politics?
Hannah replied confidently
History is the narrative and the storytelling,Geography is the context or the location, Science is the breadth of investigation and experimentation in materials and ideas and Politics, thats easy that's got to be for humour!
Hannah possessed all the best attributes you can ask for a creative student- interest, enquiry, eagerness to experiment, strong work ethic to research and investigate in her studies with an obsessive attitude and a genuine hunger and respect for learning and an understanding for continuous improvement through self reflection and review, with a modesty and respect that she could always learn a little more from others, peers, staff, technical staff or historical and contemporary artists. There will be a void in the department without Hannah and we owe it to her to make an enormous effort in our collective contributions to fill this justly!

Hannah the Artist
Hannah was a much loved member of the art department at Pembrokeshire College, first as a federation A level student gaining an A* then as a Foundation Diploma student since September working at Distinction level. Her goal was to study art at degree level and beyond. Last week she was accepted into Cardiff University to study illustration, her next interview was for Kingston University London.
I knew Hannah from the day she was born, a bright and intelligent little girl who grew into an intense and serious yet energetic and fun loving young woman with a huge future ahead of her. All young people have that potential but with Hannah the fruition of that potential seemed inevitable making her loss more difficult to accept. Just a few days ago I sat with her as she discussed the work she wanted to take to Kingston in order to gain a university place there. As we looked through a selection of the art work she had created over the previous months she would stop and question whether or not a particular piece was actually good enough to be included in her work submission to which I replied 'yes' each and every time. The reason my job was so easy that morning was that each and every piece she showed me had been created because she absolutely loved making art, not because she had been made to but because it was what she enjoyed doing. That's not to say she did not work hard, in fact quite the opposite, she knew that once you found something you enjoyed doing then it was not a chore even if there was no easy solution at the time. This was proof alone of her aptitude for working in the world of art and design. Her work ethic reflected her personality; strong, focussed and giving, with a wicked sense of humour. Her colleagues in the Foundation art studio knew that if they asked her for her view on a subject or a piece of work they would get an honest and intelligent reply. Also a reply from a fellow art student who was genuinely interested in what others were working on or exploring in their studies. Discussing and debating, drawing, making and note taking, for her there were sometimes not enough hours in the day to discover and explore creativity, whether her own or the work of others.
Hannah was someone who looked at the world around her and did one of two things, either turned it into art or got involved and enjoyed every moment. In her short time she wasted no time and lived her life to the full. Not many of us can say we have done that despite the gift of many more years. Perhaps this is something we need to learn from Hannah, to live and enjoy every moment with the intensity and energy of someone looking forwards rather than holding back or blaming boredom.
Our studio will not be the same this year without her presence, we will miss her terribly. Just as her friends, family and all those who met her, we will never forget her as our lives have been enriched by knowing her.
